Hey everyone and welcome to our first ever Pithy Perspective! Today, I am reviewing a book from my friend Kristina Hall Promises Unbroken. In this review, I will cover a few of my favorite characters, some cons of the book , any content concerns as well as giving my overall opinion. Lets get started!
First of all, I just would like to get this off my chest….
THAT WAS AMAZING!! Those of you who have the entire series, I am extremely jealous of you! I knew when I first got the book that I would have a hard time putting it down. So I waited until I had a few hours of free time in the evening because then ‘I would have a good chunk of time and then I can always set it aside for later’. Yea…that didn’t happen. I picked it up and then didn’t put it down until after I had completed it..AT THREE IN THE MORNING! Then I decided to read it again just so I could make sure I got everything from that book, and I still was able to stay interested. So a big check plus on the second read test.
Within the first couple of pages I was captivated with the story. Hall used such descriptive words that it actually helped me to feel as though I was in the story myself, walking the streets with Mae. Her desperation to find her sister was extremely evident all throughout the story, helping the reader to stay focused on the entire goal of the story. I love the character of Mae. Hall helped make her both relatable and loveable. I enjoyed being able to see her inward struggle with her faith as she was dealing with the different situations.
Favorite character was Dave Everleigh.
Now there was a strong character. I loved the part he played in the entire story- how he was always the strong rock that Mae could go to and how he always had a spiritual mindset throughout the entire book and in the end was able to make a major difference in the life of several people. (Trying so hard not to spoil anything major) His character was just…good…without being sickening. Hall made his character very well rounded. The relationship that he and Mae had was also a nice touch. The fact that there was a romance portion in the book that wasn’t blown so over the top that it seemed unrealistic and unbearable excited me. It was the icing on the cake for me.
Second place goes to Alberto. And he is super close to first place. Honestly, I just didn’t really like how much he was a drinker and how violent he was at the beginning and so I kind of really wasn’t all that impressed with him. He was, however, a very well developed bad guy in that, I was able to relate to his character in emotions and reasoning. He was shown to not be ALL bad. As we neared the end of the book however… He was honestly catching my heart as a character and I finally understood why it was called the Moretti trilogy.
My least favorite character: Im sorry…I absolutely despised Lillian. She honestly disgusted me as a person and she seemed so weak and spineless. More so than her husband Vincenzo. There for a while, I really liked Vincenzo but the way he ended his story… definitely not an attractive character at all. However…I just found that Lillian annoyed me. Thats just my opinion.
My absolute favorite scene– SPOILER!- The Salvation Scene
Honestly, I love how beautifully it was written. The detail, the emotions, the circumstances surrounding it. I loved how unexpectedly expected it was. I feel that if I were to expound on this any more I would ruin the whole thing. But it was AMAZING!
For the cons,
- I was really confused in the beginning of (SPOILER) Hazel’s name change. I couldn’t see where it was mentioned that they were the same person. I figured it was based on a few similarities, but I felt it could have been mentioned slightly that they were the same person as the confusion kind of pulled me from the story line…
- There were some sentences where the structure was kind of confusing for me and I found myself going back and rereading certain lines a couple times so I could understand what was being said. (It kind of pulled me out of the story which is a sad moment for me…)
- There were also a couple scenes that felt a little rushed or that I felt could have used a little more development. They were good or important to the story, but they went by so fast that it didn’t give it as much of importance as it should have had.
Content Concerns–
There weren’t very many major concerns for me.
- Violence- There was quite a bit of fighting-both with firearms and with fists- in the book. I do believe it was well placed in that it was centered around mob activity. The violence mentioned wasn’t too graphic, but it was descriptive in that it helped you get enough of the picture to understand the feeling of the scene.
- Alcohol- There was mention of drinking whiskey. (again, not too upsetting based on the scene and characters) The lead mobsters had drinking problems, but many times one of them would mention drinking in a bad light (helping the reader to see that the character knew it was wrong)
- Romance- not really a concern for me. Again, it was perfectly clean. Nothing inappropriate of any kind happened throughout the story. Well done!
- Language- no foul language of any kind! Great job!
All in All
I would suggest this book to anyone who likes mysteries or realistic fiction. The setting was very nicely put and beautifully detailed. I would say I would suggest it to a slightly older crowd (around the PG13 level) for the level of violence and content. The scripture inside the book was very nicely done. And although the mystery of what happened was given early on for the reader, the characters were still bent on finding out and working through the situation in a way that kept the readers interested. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would give this 4 out 5 stars for intrigue and the second read test.
